MIRACLES
A selection of Appu’s divinely hidden powers to work miracles as follows:
- When HRH Queen Elizabeth II invited the speaker of the Ceylon parliament Mr Duraisamy to attend her coronation in London, Mr Duraisamy started making the required arrangements to travel to London. While he was making the travel arrangements he fell ill and the doctors advised Mr Duraisamy to take rest and stopped him from travelling to London. During this period, Appu was spending some time in Peradeniya with Somasunthara pullavar’s brother Velupillai. Appu was able to feel and know Mr Duraisamy’s illness and got Mr Velupillai to buy a list of Ayurvedic medical ingredients (herbs). When Velupillai bought the medical ingredients, the shopkeeper commented that they were very “poisonous” in nature. When Mr Velupillai referred to the “poisonous” comment by the shopkeeper to Appu, Appu ignored it, got him to boil all the ingredients and drank the boiled and filtered liquid (196). Appu started vomiting and started to have severe loose motion (diarrhoea). Vellupillai was very sad and worried about the events happening to Appu. After this incident, Appu asked for plain soda with lime juice. After a few hours Appu came back to normal! When he got up in the morning, Appu said, “Duraisamy can go to London and his treatment is over. When he goes, both the Tamil community and Duraisamy will reap the benefits.” When Mr Duraisamy went to London, he was knighted by the Queen and became Sir Vaithilingham Duraisamy. This story was revealed by Mr Vellupillai after Appu’s Maha Samathy in March 1964. This is the unique quiet characteristics of Appu to note when others would indulge in advertising themselves and promote themselves in the world.
- Professor AS Gnanasampanthan had visited Appu more than 20 times in Columbuthurai, Jaffna. His first meeting with Appu was in 1950. His visit to Ceylon had been always involved in lectures, presentations and seminars with learned groups of academics and others. On every occasion when he gave lectures in Jaffna, he always went to see Appu at the end of the lectures. Initially Professor Gnanasampanthan did not understand why Appu was continuously singing parts of Thirumanthiram (திருமந்திரம் ), Thiruvasaham (திருவாசகம்) and Thiruvisaipa (திருவிசைப்பா) until he learnt from the devotees that all their respective queries were answered on his “bits and pieces of songs”, which Appu was continually singing in front of them in the Ashram. All devotees who were in attendance enjoyed profound peace in their minds. In Jaffna Professor Gnanasampanthan was hosted by the then Government Agent Mr Srikantha during his visits. Mr and Mrs Srikantha regularly used to attend Aadi vel (ஆடிவேல் ) festival in Kathirgama. Appu also regularly used to attend the Aadi vel festival in Kathirgama. On one occasion, due to operational reasons Mr Srikantha was grounded in Jaffna during the Aadi vel festival season. At the same time Prof Gnanasampanthan also was with him, and they decided to visit the Columbuthurai Ashram assuming the Appu would have gone to Aadi vel in Kathirgama. To their surprise Appu was in the Ashram and invited them to sit in their respective places. Appu went on to inquire from Mr Srikantha about their usual trip to Kathirgama and Mr Srikantha explained the problems and was very emotional in his explanation. Appu said to them “Do not worry, do we have a vehicle? Only that fool has a peacock, and if required he can come. Where can we go?” and laughed and sang his usual songs. After an hour or so, they returned home. Mr Srikantha said that meeting and visiting Appu on this day was as good as going to the festival in Kathirgama. Two days later Prof Gnanasampanthan went to Colombo to deliver a 5 days lecture tour hosted by Sir Kandiah Vaithiyanathan in Colombo. Prof Gnanasampanthan was invited to have lunch with the seminar organisation secretary. Before lunch was served, the organiser played the cinema recording of the Aadi Vel festival in Kathirgama. Prof Gnanasampanthan was bewildered, astounded, and overwhelmed to see Appu on the recording in Kathirgama at the same time he saw Appu in Columbuthurai Ashram. After rechecking the cinema recording date and time, Prof Gnanasampanthan went out of the room and called Mr Srikantha and told him what he saw on the cinema recording! Mr Srikantha was not inclined to believe him and said that there must be a mistake! Prof Gnanasampanthan changed his return journey back to Madras and decided to go to Jaffna after the seminars. All who were in the meeting had been to Kataragama for the Aadi Vel festival, witnessed peacock Murugan and did not want to believe Prof Gnanasampanthan’s story. When Prof Gnanasampanthan arrived at Palaly airport (Jaffna), Mr Srikantha himself drove the car without the driver to meet Prof Gnanasampanthan in order to discuss the cinema recording as he was not convinced that it was true! The same evening all three, Prof Gnanasampanthan and Mr and Mrs Srikantha went to Columbuthurai Ashram. Appu asked Prof Gnanasampanthan the reasons for his travel plan change, and when Prof Gnanasampanthan explained the reasons, Appu started laughing loudly and repeated the similar words that he said to them during their visit to him a few days back. “That fool has a peacock. How can we go? Do we have a peacock?” Prof Gnanasampanthan was realising from what he was learning that the “realised soul” like Appu can be present in several places, without anyone knowing, at the same time, Prof Gnanasampanthan gathered his confidence together and started to say “Swamy, it is true that you were in Kathirgama….” Instantly Appu shouted in a loud voice and ordered Prof Gnanasampanthan to keep his mouth shut. Their discussion went on after this incident as usual with kind words from Appu. This is the Prof Gnanasampanthan’s recollections of Appu’s Divinely state!
- In 1955 Professor S. Gnanasampanthan was invited to deliver talks / lectures in a place called Karanavai (கரணவாய்) near Jaffna. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan was invited by a Malaysian pensioner called Murukapu (முருகப்பு ). Professor S. Gnanasampanthan always visited Appu after his lectures. After the first lecture, he went to Appu and returned in the night to his residence. In the morning, when Murukapu asked him “Did you sleep well?”, the Professor could not answer a word. Only air came out of his mouth. He tried several times to pronounce the words with no success. Shocked with the feeling of not being able to talk, he went to a retired ENT consultant in Chavakacheri. After examining his throat, the consultant confirmed that Professor S. Gnanasampanthan had “Paralysis of the vocal cords” and recommended him to go to Colombo hospital for treatment. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan was flabbergasted, shocked and frightened to realise that his only source of income as a professor in delivering various lectures had come to an end, and his survival was facing big challenges. He returned to the car and as he was starting it, the consultant came to the front door of the car and suggested to the professor to meet Yogaswamy (Appu) as a devotee. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan had never met Appu during the day time, and this thought never came in his mind, until the consultant suggested it to him. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan normally visited Appu after 6 pm, and that day he went from Chavakacheri to Columbuthurai to meet Appu. When he saw Appu, he fell flat on the floor and cried to Appu. After a few minutes Appu said, “Did you think that doctor is Lord Murugan?” and suggested to him to get up and sit by the side of him on the usual place in the Ashram. After about half an hour of discussion / advice, Appu said, “young man, go and deliver your evening lecture and come back”. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan got up and replied “I will follow your orders”. These words were the first new fresh words to come out of Professor S. Gnanasampanthan’s mouth. As Professor S. Gnanasampanthan was standing in front of Appu without the awareness of his presence in front of Appu, suddenly Appu said, “young man we are the only ones who can cut and bury Seklar (சேக்கிழார்) and Kandan ( சூப்பர் ) and proceed with no fear.” Professor S. Gnanasampanthan came out of the Ashram and drove the car back to Chavakacheri to meet the consultant, who recommended his visit to the Columbuthurai Ashram. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan called out to the consultant “Dr” from the road. The consultant came out of his house and prayed to the professor. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan never expected an old wise man to behave in this manner and inquired the reasons for his action. The consultant got hold of both his hands and took him into his house. Two air tickets to fly to Madras had been delivered to the professor by the doctor’s assistant in the house. One for the professor and other for the assistant. Then the consultant explained that the illness that the professor had could only occur in one in a million and when it happens there is no cure and that it is terminal. Due to the fact that the professor could not communicate, the consultant arranged for his assistant to fly back to Madras with him to assist him during the journey. The consultant also confessed that with his 40 years ENT experience, he came to the conclusion that there was no cure available in medicine and only DIVINE intrusion can cure his illness. Normally no one visits Appu during the daytime and therefore, it was Appu who directed the consultant to send Professor S. Gnanasampanthan to his Ashram in Columbuthurai to help him. After his lecture, the professor returned to the Ashram as indicated by Appu. During this period, Professor S. Gnanasampanthan had published 30 articles on Kambaramayanam (கம்பராமாயணம் ). In 1997, Professor S. Gnanasampanthan released the book on Seklar ( சேக்கிழார் தந்த செல்வம் ). Professor S. Gnanasampanthan believes that all writings and publications are directed by Appu. After passing his 80th birthday, his voice had not changed and he continued to deliver very eloquent lectures. People started to inquire of Professor S. Gnanasampanthan whether he was undergoing any “voice culture”. Professor S. Gnanasampanthan’s reply to queries was that all the voice with which he was born in 1916 had been reinstated in 1955 by DIVINE GRACE of Yogaswamy (Appu).
